Who we are

Who we are

The humble beginning of the Institute of the Sisters of Providence dates back to 1 February 1837, the day on which the “home for the abandoned” (orphanage) was inaugurated in Udine and the first nine teachers decided to totally dedicate themselves to welcome and educate the poorest children of the city.

A private ceremony of promises of consecration to the Lord, of the first group of young Sisters, was held in Udine, on Christmas night, in 1845.

The founder, St. Luigi Scrosoppi, an Oratorian priest of St. Philip Neri, was a humble saint, of profound inner life and generous goodness, blessed with healthy realism and an unbeatable determination; in trials he acquired new vigour. He worked with untiring zeal for the good of the poor and totally abandoned himself to the divine Providence; which always accompanied his life and that of the religious Family he founded: the Sisters of Providence.

The Institute, placed under the protectionof St. Cajetan ofThiene, is of pontifical right, approved with the Decreeof Praise by the Holy Seein 1862.
